Dux Farm Silvopasture Regeneration Project

Once a former turkey farm left inactive for over 40 years, this municipally owned property was revitalized through a comprehensive forestry management plan developed in close coordination with the town. The project required multiple approvals, site walk-throughs, and careful navigation of municipal regulations. By selectively opening the forest, a silvopasture system was established—integrating farming within the existing tree canopy. Rotational grazing was introduced, beginning with cattle and followed by sheep and other low-browsing animals to naturally enrich the soil and stimulate ecological recovery. All removed trees were chipped on-site and applied in an eight-inch layer of sheet mulch throughout the central growing areas, allowing crops to be planted using recycled material from the land itself and avoiding the introduction of foreign inputs. This approach restored soil health, encouraged native seed revival, and brought the land back into productive, sustainable use.
